I had to force myself to put this book down and go to bed. Once I started in, I couldn't put this book down. This is a soldier's story, not a history lesson. Anyone looking for a treatise on jungle warfare, or the conduct of the War in Burma will have to look elsewhere. This book tells the story of one young man's experience in Burma, the section, squad to American readers, he served with, how they lived, their interactions with each other, and sadly, how many of them died. This is an honest, up close and personal account of the face of war. There's no romance, no heroics, no holding forth on the virtues of the British soldier as opposed to the Japanese soldier, just a frank and unflinching look at what the author saw and experienced.This is a must read for anyone with any delusions of revisionist history of World War II in Asia.

I've long enjoyed Fraser's Flashman novels and his stories of life as a subaltern in the Second Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders immediately after the end of the Second World War. This wonderful book takes us into the war, and into the China-Burma-India Theatre, about which many Americans, including myself, know comparatively little.It's a complex book, certainly not glorifying war, but demonstrating how, as a crucible, the experience of war can shape a man. The writing has all of Fraser's well-known gifts: wit, fascinating characterizations, and wonderfully descriptive narratives of actual events. He ably explains the workings of a Section (Squad, in our army.) of British troops during the war. The reader meets his fellow soldiers, and suffers when, just as they are becoming known, they begin to be killed, either in action, or in one case through a horrible misadventure.Also valuable is Fraser's opinion that today's U.K. is not necessarily the U.K. that he and his mates fought for. He clearly disapproves of the direction in which the U.K. has been taken. He also has a thorough dislike of the modern penchant of the media for going to great lengths to discover the feelings of soldiers who return from action in modern theatres of war. He opines that he and his mates were fortunate at the end of WW II because at that time there were no counselors. He believes, and I don't necessarily disagree, that a person's feelings are private and that people are entitled to keep them to themselves. He posits that they are indeed better off if they do.I can't do this book justice in a review that is actually short enough to bother reading. All I know is that I'm a bit different for having read it. I also believe I now have a better understanding of my father, who fought as an infantryman at Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa. For me, this was a very valuable read. For anyone who wishes to have a better understanding of the enlisted man's experience of combat, I highly recommend it.

This is a wonderful memoir of a young soldier fighting in the Burma campaign at the tail end of WW II. Of course, as someone who fell in love with the Flashman series of historical novels many decades ago, anything with Mr. Fraser's name on it will get my attention.My own father, now gone, was just about his age during the last year of the war in Europe. He arrived in Normandy early on D-Day, via a glider that landed in a flooded field. With the exception of himself and two others, everyone in the glider drowned. His war continued with from that point, to the day when he was wounded (for the 2nd time) towards the end of the Battle of the Bulge. Unlike Mr. Fraser, my father was never comfortable describing in any ordered way his experiences during that year. But I get the strong feeling that if he had been so inclined, and had the skill and insight that Mr. Fraser demonstrates in this book, he would have told a story much like the one presented here. I'm an old timer today, but I certainly feel privileged to have shared this story with Mr. Fraser

I thought this book was a very unusual and awesome look at what it is like to be a grunt in Burma. Loved that part. For me I would not have bought the book had I know there was so much 'dialect' writing of which I could hardly understand. Perhaps if you were Scottish, Irish or English it would be easier but for me (an American) it was very difficult to get though and understand what they were staying. In general I thought the author had a great sense of humor & I liked his plain spokeness. No apologies and good insights. I would have given it more stars but it was just too hard for me to make out the dialects. Bless these men, they really were great!

A waste of time and money. Narrow listings with stupid questions of agents. I replaced it with the excellent reference: Writer's Digest Guide to Literary Agents 2019.

I really enjoyed this guide. It was informative and provided a glimpse into the minds of hundreds of literary agents and editors. This book presents invaluable information for every author. I’m grateful to have access to so many tips about publishing. This guide covered topics including the initial query letter, independent presses and the top 5 Publishers, just to name a few! I highly recommend this book if you have written or are thinking of writing a book.

I totally agree with Marlo Faulkner's one-star assessment and really like the way she put it: useless blather! Literary agents were asked, for example, whether they thought the earth was created a few thousand years or several billion years ago, and that was only one of Jeff Herman's 10+ inane questions. Who cares? What a waste of space! The emphasis should have been on what the agents were looking for in a manuscript, specifically their personal likes and dislikes. Instead many of them are looking for "something that "entices me" or "makes me forget everything around me" or"makes you press the pause button on all your duties and responsibilities." This is clearly unacceptable and not helpful at all. What rubbish! Fit for the bin!

I like this book. He gives you a lot of information on the agents. What types of books they represent, who they are, and what they believe. This book will help find a good fit, which I believe is good for both parties.

I’m almost done with this book, and it has been a joy to read. I can tell the author has a soft spot in his heart for writers. That being said, he doesn’t give anyone the impression that this business is a breeze for anyone involved. Honest and informative.

I had previous versions of this book, but I noticed the new version does not have Canadian presses or university presses. I would have appreciated knowing why that was done. But it's a good resource.

Howard W. Buffett is an associate professor and research scholar at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Howard G. Those with experience in the CSR/ESG/social investing world will find much of the first part of the book familiar territory, but for neophytes, it is valuable reading to gain an understanding of the matter. But the heart of the book and Mr. Buffet's/Mr. Eimicke's true innovation is their Impact Rate of Return, or iRR. A reasonable financial valuation method for determining economic return on CSR/ESG/social investments has generally eluded CSR and financial professionals due to the complexity of - and disagreement on - economic value of externalities, which includes "social value". The book succinctly reviews some of the more well-known methods and explains why they don't work as intended, then using that as a baseline, sets out the iRR model. There are certainly subjectivities in the iRR model, but they are more limited than others. I also appreciate that Mr. Buffet and Mr. Eimicke make it clear theirs is a starting point that they hope will lead to further development and refinement. I have recommended this book to many people in the CSR/ESG realm and will continue to do, and I look forward to applying iRR in practice.

Buffett and Eimicke offer a theory and framework for creating cross-sector partnerships that isn't just intellectually interesting...it's actually helpful for change-making organizational leaders. Supported by evidence and enlightening examples, Social Value Investing is destined to become a staple in management courses around the world.

It's a nice summary of what one may have already been introduced to in business school. The author introduces one to business strategy, frameworks, and concepts that he then applies in the government-, donor-, and ngo- sectors to identify approaches that augment value and lead to success. It's a nice summary. Nothing outstanding.

The best part about this book is the case studies. As someone who cares deeply about partnerships being effective, and not just building partnerships across sectors for the sake of doing it, I found the case studies truly compelling. They tell stories of cross-sector partnerships from all over the world. From the amazing story of how the High Line was led by community leaders and supported by the business community with a long-term, inclusive mindset about their business practices. The stories aren't all positive, however. The Central Park case talks about how the challenges faced during years of poor leadership and the obstacles that even the best intentioned champions encountered.Another great aspect of the case studies is that the authors take a global lens to the work. They tell stories that they encountered personally in Brazil, in Ghana, and in Afghanistan, weaving together common themes and building all of the various insights and observations into a thoughtful and useful framework that will be of interest in the boardroom, in the halls of power in capital cities, and in the classroom. The videos that accompany the book are beautifully done, and they encourage the modern, "flipped classroom" approach to teaching that will be useful for teaching our students, or training your staff members, in how to create partnerships that are more likely to be successful -- because they are deeply grounded in the rigor that has gone into the research for this book and the decades of analysis that have made value investing into the renowned approach it has become.This text immediately becomes a meaningful contribution to cross-sector partnership development, an under-researched field of study. A real pleasure to think about government-nonprofit partnerships as investing. This unusual perspective brings us back to something we've lost in the last few decades in the US: public administration and nonprofits are intended to better the world we live in, simply on a different plane from financial investing. The book is chock-full of cases and, drawing from them, general principles for successful projects. That some aren't over or aren't guaranteed in the long-run to be successful is just as helpful to the reader. No one can expect to bat 1,000. In the difficult world of improving our society, modest success and sometimes things not panning out as expected is a good reminder of the obstacles and courage that social investing is premised on. The key is to try and keep trying. We can all make a difference.PS Disclosure: Bill and I became acquainted when we were both doctoral candidates at Syracuse University in the 1970s. While I've been impressed with everything he has accomplished in his career so far, this book is his best ever. Keep it up!
