Precarious Jobs compares job insecurity in six countries: U.S., U.K., Spain, Denmark, Japan, and Germany. It's written in an academic/bureaucratic style, with many source citations and a logical progression with chapter summaries, conclusions, and some possible solutions to the problems caused by job insecurity. It's not a casual read, and elected officials, academics, and policy makers/implementers will be most interested in the content. For those of us who are simply interested in the subject non-professionally, well, you really have to wade through a lot of dry material. I was particularly curious to learn whether job insecurity can be seen as another symptom of income inequality, and this was indeed the case, although it was labeled "earnings quality" rather than income inequality. In any case, the upshot is that professionals may well get a good, well-documented look at the problem here, and more casual readers might want to look elsewhere for a more readable account.

I've read a number of books on the end of work since the early 1990's. In fact, that's when I first heard the term precarious workers. As time increased; so did the number of author's addressing it. The best to date has been Robert W McChesney's, People Get Ready: The Fight Against a Jobless Economy and a Citizen's Democracy March 8, 2016. Through those years magazine articles[Mother Jones, Harper's and The Atlantic, to name a few I've read] have addressed this growing problem. The Week magazine also updates trends in the employment arena]. All this prelude to say I'm not new to this subject matter.What attracted me to Arne L. Kalleberg's book was it's fresh-off-the-press appeal and the author contrasting this subject matter against the backdrop of six different countries.The author framed his writing correctly by stating that employment relations in advanced, post-industrial democracies have become increasingly insecure and uncertain as the risks associated with work passed on from businesses[capital]/governments[regulators], and dumped right into the laps of the workers[labor force]. Although the author didn't spell-it-out as starkly as I have; my frame is more biased against 21st Century autonomous technologies and the corporate weaponized media against labor[daily, if not hourly stock market news; but where is the genuine labor news?]. Thus, the reader will note my review is one, not only well versed in the subject at hand; but one whose read this book and knows that this author get it as well. As this book is more of a scholarly work, my references simply reflect my readings of his facts and conclusions.For example, I simply loved the author's conclusion. Remember the author/scholar knows his subject matter like the back of his hand, and after going through six nation states and all the permutations and combinations; stated, that envisioning the future was easy: dystopian. He admitted it was more difficult to imagine utopian possibilities.Now, as far as the meat of the book, the author goes into the fine details, using many graphs and charts to exemplify his observations. One interesting point he makes again & again, are the differences between the last three decades; and the three decades after WW11. One was good for the workers[overall]; the other bad, and getting worse because of the usual suspects[deregulation & neoliberalism]. He also shows how the 2008-9 economic crisis, exacerbated by pressures on governments to implement policies of fiscal austerity and welfare state reorganization, only made matters much worse for the workers/people. Of course, the different countries were affected in many different ways; but again the author makes clear in his writings, charts, and graphs; that those countries that were engaged in expanding their social safety nets, managing labor market transitions more effectively, and implementing social and economic reforms targeted at needs and choices of increasingly diverse labor forces: faired much better for all concerned, all across the board. He also decidedly proved, beyond measure; that active labor markets policies as well as high degrees of worker power[reflected in high union density and collective bargaining coverage] all tended to reduce objective and perceived insecurities.I could go on & on; but the point is that the author knows his subject, and so will his readers. He frames his work to speak truthfully & factually. Although I prefer harsher terms - there's a reason for our current predicament: an antihuman agenda embedded in our technology, our markets and our major cultural institutions[education, religion, civics, and media] - the author does get those same conclusions across; however, he does it in a more nuanced, scholarly and professional manner.A notable scholarly work that examines the 21st Century's precarious lives, job insecurity and well-being in rich democracies.
