Lian Dolan is quickly becoming a favorite author. She writes stories that are more than intelligent chick lit, they deal with the pain of remaking yourself and finding a new path. Helen grew up in Oregon with hippy parents and went to school to become an archaeologist but instead quit and became a Pasadena housewife. Her son is 15 and about to face getting into another private school when her husband comes home New Years Eve to tell her he is leaving her for a local TV anchor. He dies a comic death run over by a Panda float at the Rose Bowl Parade while texting said girlfriend. After the funeral Helen find that she is sunk financially because her husband had gone through their savings and made questionable investments for them personally and through the hedge fund he managed. Their friends had known about the affair and the money, but kept their mouths shut. Her house has to be put on the market, her paintings, antiques and wedding china are gone too and Helen has to get a real job immediately after 15 years out of the job market.She had volunteered at the Huntington and decided to start her job search there where she lucks into a job helping a visiting professor with research. Patrick has gotten this grant from the Huntington to study the notebooks Rudy Schliemann left of his time helping his uncle uncover Troy. Patrick does not expect much from the journals and grows to appreciate the way Helen smoothes out his life and work. He is booked for the Dirty Archaeologist when Helen discovers Rudy was having a read hot affair with his uncle's young wife Sophie. Helen is slowly working her way out of the chaos her husband left her in and trying to downsize and get their lives back on track. The characters are funny and the humor is full of pathos. Helen starts to feel more for Patrick, but does not see how it would work if he returned her feelings. Watching Helen use her volunteer training to take on the world reminds me of how much that training brings to the table. I would rather sit through a board meeting than to deal with the volunteer politics of some areas. Helen of Pasadena is a winner.

Loved this book! The book is well written, has a fun plot and is laugh-out-loud witty. She has nailed some personality types that we've all been forced to deal with and had her lead character cope with them admirably. I'm looking forward to reading her next book.

I had a bit of a difficult time to get interested in the first part of the book. I found it to be wordy, therefore my mind would wander off a bit. After the float accident, it reved up for me and I was hooked on the story and could not put it down. I did enjoy the story and loved Helen. The ending was a bit quick, I guess I was expecting a bit more but all in all I was happy I read this book, it was a fun read.

Ms. Dolan is an excellent writer who loaded up this book with witty descriptions of people and situations. I do not like chick (chic?) lit so her writing truly is excellent to overcome my dislike of the genre. On the minus side, it had every cliché you find in chick lit books. An insecure heroine who finds out by the end of the book that she can attract a hot guy? Check. A heroine who is betrayed by her cheating husband but finds a much better guy by the end of the book? Check. A heroine who has been out of the job market raising her kids and is insecure about finding a job, but who finds she can get a great one? Check. Great girlfriends who provide tons of support? Check.If you like chick lit, this should be a no-brainer purchase for you. If you don't like chick lit, try the sample and see if Ms. Dolan's writing skill can win you over.

Was recommended to me as very funny...I did not find it so. Stereotypical characters, stereotypical romance, nice but boring plot and main characters. Also read lian's other book; they are very similar. This one had more typos than I like in ebooks. Okay for a mindless vacation read, but I like to either learn a little or meet challenging characters in novels. This does neither. **yawn**

This was so fun & entertaining to read. The fact that I am familiar with Pasadena, made it even better. My friends are reading now after my recommendation.This is a read that sticks with you.

I read a sample of this on Amazon and bought the Kindle version to this and another of her books right away. There are so many romance books and so many poor writers, that it was a joy to find this.The book starts with Helen at her husband's funeral. He had wanted a divorce, had been having an affair and had been texting the Other Woman when he died in an accident. Helen is left with a big house, no money, and no job. But she has girlfriends, skills, and she is smart. This is the next year of her life.I couldn't put it down.

Not the type of book I usually read, and really enjoyed it. Got really caught up in the storyline, characters and their lives which are so vastly different than my own. Look forward to more books by this author.
