Very interesting book about a very unique indiviual. A good read. I found it ieasy to read,and the book kept my interest.

Shortly before his death, Morley (then in his eighties) and I were watching a friend fly his falcon in a field in southwest Idaho. As we crossed a ditch, Morley stumbled and came scrambling up the other side grumbling about the German shrapnel that was still lodged in his legs. For any of us who knew and hung out with Morley, his stories from WWII were as interesting and exciting as his exploits in falconry and raptor conservation. Steve Stuebner has done a fantastic job of detailing the many sides of Morlan Nelson's personality and the incredibly rich life that he led. Some might think that the tales Steve relates in this book must have been enhanced or embellished a bit to make for better reading. But let me assure you, they're carefully researched and true in every detail. Over the 25 years that I knew him, I learned that Morley didn't need to enhance his stories; the life he led provided more than enough material to fascinate and entertain anyone fortunate enough to hear them. Now everyone has a chance to hear about Morley's early life and fascination with birds, his exploits with the 10th Mountain Division in Italy, his years hiking high snow-covered mountains in Idaho and lengths he went to trying to capture raptors on film and champion their conservation. You want guts, try walking into an Idaho ranchers' convention in the late 60's with a golden eagle on your fist, and telling them the bird wasn't really their enemy. Or convince a large electrical company that they need to modify or replace thousands of utility poles to keep raptors from being electrocuted. Heck, just for fun, tie a rope around a flat, 60 lb. rock and then send a 175 lb. John Denver over the cliff with the reassurance that the rock anchor will hold his weight. This is the life that Morley led, and the tales that Steve Stuebner puts down on paper for everyone to enjoy. Morley may be gone, but his legacy still soars on golden wings over the mountains and canyons he held so dear. I laughed, I cried; two thumbs up!This is a fast-paced story about an amazing man who has, through hard work, tenacity, and strong vision, accomplished more in his life than most people ever will. The life lessons he learns are lessons for everyone, and his outlook on life and philosophy are words to live by.From his boyhood on a North Dakota Farm, through fighting the Germans in the mountains as a ski trooper in WW II, his scientific exploits, flying falcons with the royal families of the Middle East and making movies with Walt Disney - raising a family all the while - Morley's life story is hard to put down.The only improvement I could have asked for was a little tighter editing of an already-tightly written book. But the story is so strong, you'll revel in each moment regardless. Steubner deserves huge credit for capturing the essence of this great man.

There is a great story in the life of Morley Nelson, and Steve Stuebner tells it well in this fascinating biography. Nelson has dedicated his life to the rehabilitation and protection of raptors--those big birds that are really into eating meat. When an eagle pierces Morley's chin through to the roof of his mouth with its talons, Morley reasons that the bird hadn't done it with malice. It had simply mistaken his tongue for a snack. This book is loaded with "bits" like this--on Morley's life as a film maker, conservationist, family man, and soldier. Stuebner deftly relates incidents from Morley's service in the 10th Mountain Division during WW II, his grievous personal losses, and his professional triumphs. This is a book that anybody--not just raptor wonks--can enjoy.
