I have many books on Linux and ubuntu. I am a beginner but as far as really understanding what you need to know to properly use Linux, this is the best. It is just very clear and user friendly. It gave me details that are very important and somehow missed. Like the space after CD and case sensitivity. They all mention it but this book shows you the command and explains it. This is my go to book. I am glad it was only 99 cents. When I went to the review, I expected it to be one of my more expensive books. This is the only book you will need to thoroughly navigate through the command line and your system. It is for beginners but the beginning is a long road. I study java and play with other languages but I didn't think to really get through my own computer, which I have been using a fairly user friendly gui. With so many forums out there, I could still do what I needed as long as I could grasp the details. This book makes it all easier.

Most books lack the big picture, the conceptual explanation, and a use for the command after it has been illustrated. This covers enough to get you up & running with the command line, nicely. If you are missing pieces of the basic Linux puzzle this will be quite helpful. It's definitely worth the price & more.

This is a great, inexpensive beginners guide for new users to Linux. There were a lot of typos, but the book is a well written guide and I didn't notice any typo's in the commands. The book covers the basic commands, and getting around the Linux shell. The section on using Vim was great and well explained. If you are an absolute beginner to Linux I think the book is a steal for the price. If you are a seasoned user or someone with more than a basic understanding of getting around Linux , you may want to move on to some more advanced reading.Taken from the book :In the Guide, you'll learn how to: Copy, move, and delete files and directories. Create, delete, and manage users. Create, delete, and manage groups. Use virtual terminals. Use the bash shell. Safely use the root account with su and sudo. Change permissions and ownership of files and directories. Create and edit text files from the command line, without using a graphical editor. Diagnose network connectivity problems. And many other topics.I gave this book 5 stars because it covered exactly what it stated, and was a steal for the price.

This book brings back information I used in the DOS days. Age has a way of stealing your memories and I needed assistance.Thank you for the well written material. I'd buy it again. So should you.Gareth

A very handy guide, and from my iPad easy to keep near the Linux screen. Yes, I have seen a few typos, but I find some in printed literary works from time to time as well. The only part lacking thus far (I am a little over 1/2 way into the book) was no instruction on adding a user to the sudoers file. I am working CentOS at the moment, but think it's pretty much the same in Ubuntu. My test user could not access root privileges via the sudo command because it was not in the sudoers file. It took a little web searching to learn how to edit that file and add the user, then it worked. But I haven't found those tips in this book. I might also recommend for newbies doing the same to create a group ("admin" is a good name choice), give the group root privileges, and then add any users to that group as needed. That solves the problem, and does not require manually adding each user to sudoers individually.All in all, though, this book is just what I needed to begin to learn the Linux command line, and recommend it to anyone seeking same,

There are several book like this one available and all are good. I recommend reading all of them, especially for the give-away prices, because there are things that one author will explain that goes over your head, but then when you read the same topic in one of the other books, it's an "AHA moment."This one focuses on using command-line commands instead of the GUI interface. Translation: The focus is on typing coded commands into a line on your desktop instead of clicking on a little icon do to the same thing. This works for some folks and not for others. I prefer the icons, BUT . . . there are times when it is to your distinct advantage to know how the command-line function works, so even if you're not that interested now, it's a good one to skim through so you'll know where to look when you need the info!Highly recommended. So is Ubuntu! If you're a newbie, stick with it. Read this book and the others like it. It's worth your while!

It doesn't go very deep, but it's not supposed to. It is very clear and picks a good set of topics for beginners. I know a little more than raw beginner, but i picked up a couple of pointers here and was glad i took the short time required to read this.

Most beginner books for Linux flood the reader with the obscurity that makes learning Linux difficult. this author makes things simple, and straight forward; a useful tutorial, that doesn't keep you guessing how Linux works. Many typos and grammatical errors, but besides this small annoyance, the book is very useful, easy to read, and much more straight forward than Linux itself :-)
