This book is very well written with a flowing combination of military facts and figures surrounded by many individual harrowing combat stories. I had just finished a history of the battle for Saipan and this book fit nicely into an overall understanding of the campaign for the Marianas. It is readable and enjoyable while tying in complicated details nicely. I.E. The role of the Naval Shore bombardments, air cover, and quite detailed too about artillery support which I found refreshing since that aspect is often mentioned only in passing. Also included are details about the landing shore parties, pre-invasion RECON, and boat operators. Five Stars from me.
The book was an excellent follow up to a book I read on the battle for Saipan where the focus was on Saipan. The Battle for Tinian book provided the substance and detail touched on by the Saipan book. I recommend this book to help round out the strategy and battles for the Marianas.
Very good book on the overall battle for Tinian. Not mush on individual Soldiers but worth the read.
Easy read. We don't realize all that went into the lead up to the Enola Gay. I didn't know the Japanese had launched air raids on the island.
A very detailed account of planning and tactics and deception in winning the battle for the island. The bravery of the marines is often noted.
Rode a destroyer named after a Marine Medal of Honor winner. Wanted to know about the battle, where/how he died etc. Little discussed battle. But brutal and key to Pacific victory.
Prefer produces a workable and enjoyable history of the campaign, but his writing is plagued by passive voice and misuse of tense. He lacks a strong prologue but recovers admirably with a fantastic concluding chapter. He makes good use of photographs and maps, but would have benefited from an increased attention to US losses counts within the narrative. Overall this is a fantastic starting point for anyone interested in the Tinian campaign. This work deserves a new edition, expanding on his analysis of the successes, strategically and tactically, of US operations on Tinian.
Although historical in content, this was a must interesting book and I learned a great deal from it. For such a vital strategic capture, you would think there would be more about this battle.
