Issues involving the Commerce Clause. “The Supreme Court’s willingness to expand Congress’s rights under the Commerce Clause reached a zenith in 1964. Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin in places of public accommodation, like hotels and restaurants.”18. Cases involving monopolies. “In an undeniably landmark case, the Court broke up Standard Oil into separate geographic units (not unlike what happened in the telephone industry decades later). In so doing, the Court announced a new rule to be applied in future monopoly cases—the so-called “rule of reason.” “19. A look at the separation of powers. “To his credit, Nixon complied less than a week later. The House Judiciary Committee had already begun impeachment proceedings, and Nixon knew that the evidence on the tapes would seal his fate. On August 8, 1974, reading the writing on the wall, Nixon resigned—the first president ever to do so. Vice President Gerald Ford assumed the presidency.”20. How free is free speech? “Fundamentally, Brandenburg provides a constitutional safe haven for virtually all speech that communicates an idea or position, no matter how repugnant. Our traditions so respect the right of free speech that our government will protect even those who espouse that it be overthrown.”21. A look at the impact of new technologies. “The Chief Justice then answered the question as directly as it could be answered: “Our answer to the question of what police must do before searching a cell phone seized incident to an arrest is accordingly simple—get a warrant.” In other words, the “search incident to arrest” rule will no longer apply to cell phones.”Negatives:1. I like the aim and the approach of this book. I may read the full text of Supreme Court decisions from time to time, but for many topics, a straightforward "what, basically, did it say?" is what I need to have answered. The language is very straightforward and geared to the non-expert.

This book was required reading for a course I am taking. I thought it would be a book of legal talk, but it wasn't. Very interesting case studies of how justices come to their conclusions. Although I did not agree with some of case outcomes, it was an eyeopener as to how decisions are made.To me, these cases had a balance of justices. Now I am alarmed what the outcomes would have been if court had been or will be unbalanced.

I originally bought this book because several of the kids I tutor were required to read it over the summer and I wanted to be on the same page as them. Now, I'm just really enjoying the book. I started it two days ago and I'm almost done with it. It gets into the pertinent information of the cases without getting overwhelming or into too much legalize. For the legalize it does use, there are clear definitions with the usage so there is no looking up to be done. This was required reading for two different high school social studies classes, but it's a really good book for anyone interested in our nation's history or looking for a good starting point for looking at supreme court history. Some parts are remarkably funny and the book engages the reader well. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject matter or someone studying U.S. Government and looking for a good solid base of knowledge to start with.Really, every American should read this book.

Great book. It explains the most historic Supreme Court cases in an accessible manner. It's very interesting and relevant to today.

This book looks at 40+ of the most impactful Court cases in American history. It is a really good starting text if you’re interested in how the court works and which cases have been seen as important and why. You also see how cases build off of each other and sometimes overrule one another as times change.

Mr. Trachtman's writing style will draw you in before you finish page 2. He comfortably walks you through some very complicated Supreme Court decisions as if you are sitting in the court room and aware of the intracicies on both sides of the case. Then, he informs the reader of the ramifications of these decisions on society, allowing you to introspect them into your own life. I highly recommend this book as an informative tour of the interworkings of the Supreme Court from both a practical, legal and political perspective. I truly enjoyed it while being educated and informed about the importance of the Court as an instrument of law and it's impact on our society.

I share the stories with my education law class. They are well written and easy for non-attorneys to understand.The students are able to see how the precedents in the cases apply to public schools.
