It took me about three chapters to really get into this delicious manga. The main character, I have to admit, annoyed me from the get-go. The story opens with a special news report regarding three missing students at an all-girls' high school. The main character is roaming the school grounds at night and happens upon the vampire Endo Yasuko attacking and murdering a fourth student. She runs away, and then decides NOT to report what she saw because she doesn't want the hassle of being interviewed by police and reporters. I thought, what a terrible person!Endo realizes she's been caught so she tracks down the girl to bribe her into silence by buying her food. They strike a bargain; she'll let Endo feed from her if Endo will move in and help pay the bills. When when the first full moon appears after they begin living together, Endo loses control and tries to feed on the first girl who passes by her, but she doesn't find her blood to her liking and rejects her. The rejected victim makes it her mission to expose and destroy Endo. This story is really cute and funny, in that the main character 100% believes Endo is a serial killer but, despite letting her feed from her neck three times a day, does not think she is a literal vampire. All signs point toward the obvious, with Endo's aversion to churches and garlic and her rampant bloodlust, but the reader is still left guessing because somehow the main character's doubts influence your judgment. A lot of silly things happen along the way to keep the story light in spite of how dark it sounds. For example, when the rejected victim hires a vampire hunter from Texas who does not speak Japanese, Endo and the hunter have to trade insults by using an online translator and passing a cell phone back and forth!But...is this a yuri manga? Hm...time will tell. Endo made a pass at the main character as soon as she moved in with her, and she only attacks females and won't even speak to men. There's no romance so far, but it's still a great manga and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here!

A few days ago, I was rereading a favorite novella, Carmilla by J. Sheridan LeFanu. Many will recognize it as one of the great vampire stories. Hungry For You: Endo Yasuko Stalks the Night is a new manga series I decided to sample and it's almost like Carmilla done as comedy. Shizue, a student at a girls' high school, finds herself involved with Endo, a mysterious girl who certainly has all the hallmarks of a vampire. The two are soon living together as Endo sees Shizue as a good emergency blood supply (though she has to warn her new buddy to lay off the garlic). We also have Agawa, who suspects Endo of being behind sinister happenings and Ashley, an American would-be vampire hunter Agawa hires. Ashley reminded me of a favorite character, Ils, from Monster Musume. They both have the theater bug. Hungry For You got off to a reasonably good start and the cast shows potential. I did not fall in love with it but I am willing to look at the next volume.

Perhaps I wanted more from this first volume. There are two in the series and I'm not sure if I will get the second one.The plot was never really established, the characters weren't anything new, and the romance felt awkward, and never really genuine. Even the friendships feel stale.Since I base my ratings from plot and not fanservice (something I don't deal with), it was a little annoying to get into this.Maybe it's not for me, as when I compare this to the others I own of its genre, I prefer series more like Bloom Into You and Kase-san and Morning Glories.

I'm a fan of Yuri, the Japanes take on Vampires, and comedy with some dark stuff thrown in. This manga is right up my alley, and i'm glad to say it meet and in some places exceded expectations. The dialouge is great, as if these are real people speaking. Thus it creates fun and relatable characters, especially our mains. The mysterious ditzy and uncaring Endo Yasuko is facinating to watch for obvious comedic and vamparitic reasons, and her companion/food Shizue is pragmatic and serious but still finds time to be funny herselfThe art is good too, transfering between the semi-dramatic, comedic, and horror (ish) moments. In fact the flashes of displaying horror in this make me want an actual horror manga from Flowerchild. You can occasionally not tell some backgrounds appart, but not often and even then it wouldnt really matter.Though, the sequential storytelling can fall flat sometimes. Like panels dont always flow, and at times it doesnt even focus on what it should be. Like a character transforms in some way, and we cant even tell what it is cause there's nothing there showing it. We know later after it's over but it feels poorly thought outPlot itself is technically very thin, but this is a character driven narrative not a plot driven one so whatever.Overall this is a really good book. A for sure recommendation
