Social Value Investing: A Management Framework for Effective Partnerships, by Howard W. Buffett

Review

Social Value Investing offers a compelling argument and practical framework for how collaboration between philanthropy, governments, and the private sector can drive long-lasting solutions to the world's toughest challenges. (Bill Gates)The secret to success often involves recognizing the power of partnerships. Social Value Investing shows how extraordinary returns can be achieved when governments, businesses, nonprofits, and citizens team up and work together. (Michael Bloomberg)Grounded in a well-researched and tested approach, this book will serve as a framework for partnership building. As you learn from the strategies pursued in these stories, you’ll discover just why I’m so hopeful about the future. You will enjoy this book, and I’ll bet you will be inspired, too, by its message of optimism and action. (Warren Buffett)The book discusses the benefits of extensive collaboration between companies, governments, philanthropists and investors. But it is Buffett’s framework for predicting and measuring the positive social and environmental impact of a project that will be of interest to impact investors. (Stephen Foley Financial Times)A critical contribution to our understanding of how to solve the world’s most pressing problems, presented as a practical step-by-step guide to forming powerful transformational partnerships. Through firsthand accounts dispatched from Brazil, India, New York City, and Afghanistan, Social Value Investing sets a new standard for effective international development. (Josette Sheeran, president and CEO, Asia Society)In this important new book, Howard W. Buffett and William Eimicke have created a simple framework for building lasting social change through partnerships. They provide insights on what has worked, what has not worked, and the lessons learned. These best practices are a great guide for NGOs, private sector firms, and governments that are forging new partnerships. This should be essential reading for students and practitioners in economic development, non-profit management, and public policy. (Sonal Shah, director, Beek Center for Social Impact+Innovation, Georgetown University)Eimicke and Buffett posit a new architecture for business models used to tackle our most intractable social problems based on the concept of 'shared success.' The solutions they cite lead to not only efficacy but also high performance, motivating a new way of thinking about social change. This book updates our thinking on this new form of problem solving and provides useful pragmatic and actionable examples to serve as business models for the next generation of social change maker. (Ted D. Zoller, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)The public sector is overwhelmed when it comes to the problems it needs to solve. Government faces a crisis of limited resources and a polarized leadership. What Buffett and Eimicke outline in Social Value Investing is how the private sector can fill the vacuum. It isn’t about eliminating the need for government, it’s about how to infuse the public sector with the innovation needed to make a dent into our collective societal challenges, like affordable housing, health care, transportation, or climate change. Bottom line, this book serves as a blueprint for our government officials to address one of our society’s most vexing challenges: our inability to actually solve problems. (Chuck Todd, Host of Meet the Press)"Making a significant positive impact on the world is the holy grail of today's philanthropists, along with a growing number of businesses and public sector organizations. Impact Rate of Return, a new measurement for social impact at the heart of Social Value Investing, helps organizations achieve that goal. Buffett and Eimicke have authored an inspiring book with a detailed framework for collaborative leaders committed to doing good better.” (Matthew Bishop, coauthor, Philanthrocapitalism: How Giving Can Save the World, and former senior editor, The Economist Group)Social Value Investing is a must-read for practitioners and academics who are truly interested in how to develop and implement inclusive and effective public policies. By seamlessly connecting rich case studies with an analytically sophisticated framework, Buffett and Eimicke show how partnerships between government, corporations, and philanthropy can provide the resources, expertise, and agility to solve complex twenty-first-century problems. (Ester R. Fuchs, Professor of International and Public Affairs and Political Science, Columbia University)

Those with experience in the CSR/ESG/social investing world will find much of the first part of the book familiar territory, but for neophytes, it is valuable reading to gain an understanding of the matter. But the heart of the book and Mr. Buffet's/Mr. Eimicke's true innovation is their Impact Rate of Return, or iRR. A reasonable financial valuation method for determining economic return on CSR/ESG/social investments has generally eluded CSR and financial professionals due to the complexity of - and disagreement on - economic value of externalities, which includes "social value". The book succinctly reviews some of the more well-known methods and explains why they don't work as intended, then using that as a baseline, sets out the iRR model. There are certainly subjectivities in the iRR model, but they are more limited than others. I also appreciate that Mr. Buffet and Mr. Eimicke make it clear theirs is a starting point that they hope will lead to further development and refinement. I have recommended this book to many people in the CSR/ESG realm and will continue to do, and I look forward to applying iRR in practice.

Buffett and Eimicke offer a theory and framework for creating cross-sector partnerships that isn't just intellectually interesting...it's actually helpful for change-making organizational leaders. Supported by evidence and enlightening examples, Social Value Investing is destined to become a staple in management courses around the world.

An amazing book filled with valuable lessons from generations of Buffetts and their associates over the years. All that collective knowledge, combined with the social movements of today’s young people rolled into one book. Please BUY & GIFT this book as often as possible. We reap what we sow.Peace

It's a nice summary of what one may have already been introduced to in business school. The author introduces one to business strategy, frameworks, and concepts that he then applies in the government-, donor-, and ngo- sectors to identify approaches that augment value and lead to success. It's a nice summary. Nothing outstanding.

Simply outstanding!

The best part about this book is the case studies. As someone who cares deeply about partnerships being effective, and not just building partnerships across sectors for the sake of doing it, I found the case studies truly compelling. They tell stories of cross-sector partnerships from all over the world. From the amazing story of how the High Line was led by community leaders and supported by the business community with a long-term, inclusive mindset about their business practices. The stories aren't all positive, however. The Central Park case talks about how the challenges faced during years of poor leadership and the obstacles that even the best intentioned champions encountered.Another great aspect of the case studies is that the authors take a global lens to the work. They tell stories that they encountered personally in Brazil, in Ghana, and in Afghanistan, weaving together common themes and building all of the various insights and observations into a thoughtful and useful framework that will be of interest in the boardroom, in the halls of power in capital cities, and in the classroom. The videos that accompany the book are beautifully done, and they encourage the modern, "flipped classroom" approach to teaching that will be useful for teaching our students, or training your staff members, in how to create partnerships that are more likely to be successful -- because they are deeply grounded in the rigor that has gone into the research for this book and the decades of analysis that have made value investing into the renowned approach it has become. This text immediately becomes a meaningful contribution to cross-sector partnership development, an under-researched field of study. That is because the authors have taken the time, effort, and thought to go ever deeper in their research at Columbia University -- to not only come up with a framework, but to test it out; to not only grasp trends, but to clarify and critique our understandings of them; to not only tell success stories but to share the struggles of the many leaders described in this text. What results from the authors' years of effort and analysis is a powerful book. Truly, highly recommended.

A real pleasure to think about government-nonprofit partnerships as investing. This unusual perspective brings us back to something we've lost in the last few decades in the US: public administration and nonprofits are intended to better the world we live in, simply on a different plane from financial investing. The book is chock-full of cases and, drawing from them, general principles for successful projects. That some aren't over or aren't guaranteed in the long-run to be successful is just as helpful to the reader. No one can expect to bat 1,000. In the difficult world of improving our society, modest success and sometimes things not panning out as expected is a good reminder of the obstacles and courage that social investing is premised on. The key is to try and keep trying. We can all make a difference.PS Disclosure: Bill and I became acquainted when we were both doctoral candidates at Syracuse University in the 1970s. While I've been impressed with everything he has accomplished in his career so far, this book is his best ever. Keep it up!

As a manager in the public sector, this book makes some incredible points on how we as public managers can get the biggest bang for our tax dollars. It gives us some great paths and avenues to explore on how to change the way we do everyday business in a cost effective manner while still providing the essential services our taxpayers. This book shows us how we can do it better, by using your creativity, to provide more for less, while making our society as better place to be.
