You can't truly forgive someone who isn't repentant. The author attempts to make his subject sympathetic, but "Axis Sally" eliminates that possibility with her selfish life choices and arrogant refusal to accept the accompanying consequences. Gillars had plenty of opportunities to avoid the situation she faced with the Nazis, but chose to ignore the dangers so she could be with her lover. Lois Zamperini faced a similar situation during WWII (broadcast propaganda for the Japanese or face internment), he made the hard choice and survived two years of torture and starvation. He returned home a hero. Miss Gillars was paid very well and had her ego stroked for taunting and trying her best to discourage American youth fighting against an evil dictator. How did she think she would be treated after the war?She lived to be 88 and never once admitted that what she did was wrong. Most people gain wisdom with age. Apparently she was immune. This was a woman who said the most horrible racist things imaginable on the air for years. She claims that she didn't know what was happening to the Jews during the war. So you saw them being beaten in the streets, stores and synagogues burned, hundreds of discriminatory laws passed, almost every speech blamed Jews for all problems in society, and you were surprised when you found out that they were being systematically killed? The author doesn't mention if she ever recanted her hate for the Jewish people. I'm not sure what we learn from the Axis Sally story other than a self-centered life is a wasted and unhappy life.The author did an amazing amount of research and the four stars is for his work on this book. It was an interesting story that was hard to put down.

"Axis Sally" was the name given to several American women broadcasting for Germany and Italy during World War II. Their broadcasts were aimed at allied troops and were intended as propaganda to demoralize them. This book is about the Axis Sally who was the most-listened-to of those.Mildred Gillars was an aspiring actress who, through a combination of bad luck and bad judgment, found herself the most hated American of the post-War period. How she got to that point is the subject of the first part of the book.The last part of the book details what happened to Gillars after the war. She was accused by the U.S. government of treason, which carried the penalty of death. The story of how she was brought to trial and how the trial proceeded, with all the behind-the-scenes politics involved, is as riveting as Gillars' path from the American Midwest to Nazi Berlin.Gillars is not a sympathetic character. She was apparently motivated by a huge desire for fame. Her anti-semitic radio rants seemed to be inspired by her true feelings as well as by living in Nazi Germany for over a decade. Her love affairs with influential men initially helped her rise in her career but always ended badly. Even after she was arrested by U.S. authorities, she continued to believe that she had done nothing wrong.But she isn't a one-dimensionally evil character either. She became Axis Sally one seemingly innocent step at a time. It was the Depression and after having had limited success in finding acting jobs in New York, she went overseas where she found what seemed a secure job. When that fell through, she managed to get a job in radio. As an American in Berlin, she had to watch her step and just as she realized she should leave, her passport was confiscated.Richard Lucas' narrative kept me hooked throughout and his documentation is flawless. Every time I had a question about some detail, his endnotes pointed to the answer. I read this on Kindle and realized it would be great to have an enhanced version that includes excerpts of the radio broadcasts. It was easy to find them online though, and they add a vivid dimension to an almost forgotten chapter of World War II.

Really a 2.5 star rating. Unlike some readers who found the level of detail excessive, I really found the story very compelling, but I am a history buff and particularly curious about the era. It's not the best-written book, and I agree with others who believe the author something of a Nazi apologist so readers should be aware of that going in. That said, the author is attempting to describe the vagaries and inconsistencies of wartime "justice," and on that point the author is correct and it is interesting to see the way the US Govt worked its postwar handling (or not) of Nazi war crimes. The subject of the biography is horrifying in her narcissism and lack of integrity, but that is why her story is a compelling one to read. There are some typos in the book, but they are not so numerous or egregious as to be overly distracting (unlike a lot of the discounted Kindle books out there). For people interested in the era and in wartime propaganda there is interesting information to be had here, but don't expect a brilliantly written book. Valuable for the information and draw your own insights.

Under the gun, Axis Sally, aka Mildred Gillars, used the most potent media of the day (radio) to portray Nazi Germany in a positive light. Her broadcasts, directed to Allied troops, were intended to demoralize and weaken their resolve to destroy the Third Reich. Her efforts were in vain but you must read the book to learn her ultimate fate.This is an unbiased look at Mildred Gillar's life and, by itself, is somewhat disconcerting. You want to hate Mildred for what she did but nothing is ever so simple... While Mildred's broadcasts were unquestionably propaganda it may be argued that they were done under duress. The book doesn't favor either side of the discussion but reports the facts as they are. You can decide how you feel.I won't spoil the story by revealing the ending but I will say that it well described the Goebbels-directed media role during WWII. As to Axis Sally, you need to read the book to find out about what happens to her. I promise you, it's worth the time.
