Great book on mountain man life. If you like this book you will also want to read the following similar 99-cent books:1 Journal of a Trapper Or Nine Years Residence among the Rocky Mountains Between the years of 1834 and 1843 (1921)2 Forty Years a Fur Trader on the Upper Missouri (1898)3 My Sixty Years on the Plains: Trapping, Trading, and Indian Fighting (1905)4 My Life as an Indian: The Story of a Red Woman and a White Man in the Lodges of the Blackfeet (1907)5 Three Years Among the Comanches: The Narrative of Nelson Lee, the Texas Ranger, Containing a Detailed Account of His Captivity Among the Indians, His Singular Escape ...(1859)6 Life Among the Paiutes (1883)7 On the Border with CROOK (1891)8 Adventures of the First Settlers on the Oregon or Columbia River (1849)9 The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth : Mountaineer, Scout, and Pioneer and Chief of the Crow Nation of Indians (1856)10 Brigham's Destroying Angel Being the Life, Confession, and Startling Disclosures of the Notorious Bill Hickman, the Danite Chief of Utah (1904)

Although a gritty account of the hardships suffered by the mountain men, Zenas shows a total lack of understanding of the Indian psyche and way of life. He at times calls them heathens and savages, judging them with the Eurocentric eyes normally used by those who weren't able to understand the harsh realities of the Indian life in the early 19th century. He also inadvertently shows how they often killed game for sport and not just survival- sometimes just taking the choice cut of many buffalo and leaving the carcass to rot in the plains. (On one trip with 150 men, he proudly states they killed HUNDREDS of antelope)Usually he will talk about a tribe without explaining (or knowing) what tribe it is, and throughout all his travels we normally don't know just WHERE he is in the country- for those of us with interest in this important history, these 2 points are very important, I would have liked to keep a mental map of his travels.Much better books are "My life with the Indians" by George Catlin, or "Four years in the Rockies" by James Marsh

This was a book that I think every American should read (or at least similar accounts). I learned a lot of things that I never knew about history, life at the time, and differences in cultures/values. This book really gives you a fuller and honestly more complicated, or realistic version of history. It shows a history very different from what textbooks today will talk about indians, whites etc. That being said, the book is a really good book to read to understand how tough life was and how thankful we should be to live in a place and society as today. In sum, I recommend this book to someone who wants to know about the times, US history, or simply wants the full truth. The reason I gave it 5 stars is: 1) primary document or first hand account, can't beat that for accuracy. 2) historically educating. 3) very readable. 4) eye opening.

I am not a scholar on this subject. I wanted to find a book that gave factual information on trappers and Indians. I was not looking for yarns like Dances With Wolves or Jeremiah Johnson. I never knew there were so many tribes or how brutal they were to one another. The trappers were brave men either living in feast or famine and many times lost. I never like reading about the killing of animals for recreation. Minus one star because the book did not include a glossary for those archaic words that are not included in the Kindle dictionary.

Reading this narrative gave new meaning to traveling by foot and horseback acrosss the western wilderness in the early 1800s.Encounters wth the various Indian tribes was really hair-raising as some tribes were friendly and others very hostile (the Blackkfeet tribe seemed to be the most ferocious). By and large, travelling to the Pacifi Coast from what was at that time the United States, was quite a feat as they were trapping beaver, buffalo, deer, etc. for the hides to sell back East when they returned and also to replenish their food provisions. The narrative of the "mountain man" is very descriptive of the people with whom he was traveling, encounters with hostile and/or friendly Indians and how they dealt with them. Descriptions of how the various tribes dealt with hostile tribes is very graphic—not for the faint of heart. Overall, the book is very interesting and I'll probably read it again. T. Wayne

Very interesting to see how hard this life was.Difficult to parse the language used by the author. But the meaning could eventually be understood. I learned a lot about the interactions of various Indian tribes. As well as the Spanish and all of the cultures met during the 4+ years that Zenas was crossing the continent.

To really get a feel for what it was like to be a true " mountain man" , this book is a must! So many great stories and adventures included take one to the cutting edge of our early history with these travels at this time. Especially enjoyed the early interaction with various Indian Tribes and their way of life. The early contacts with the Spanish in California and their contacts with Americans pushing west is fascinating. So enjoyed the stories of the Spanish Sport of " bull baiting," as witnessed by the mountain men. To ride in the drivers seat with Zenas Leonard is a treat!

Wonderful book! Interesting to know how the western US was before large population. Well written. I enjoyed the portion about Monterey County, San Benito County and Santa Clara County in California. I lived there many years and can relate. Men were tough then. You'll enjoy this Book
